Featured T-Shirt: The Philly Sound 76

The Philly Sound 76 / T-Shirt

Brand: The Art Of Soul Ltd / Exclusively for The Color Pop Shop

In celebration of Black Music Month this March, we debut our latest wearable art collection "The Philly Sound 76". Before there was disco, smooth jazz and the quiet storm, there was Philadelphia Soul. Debuting in the early 70's and spanning into the 80's, this "Philly Sound" was deeply rooted in Soul, Funk and Jazz. The Philly Sound was pioneered by legendary songwriter/producer team of Kenneth Gamble & Leon Huff and their record label, Philadelphia International Records. What made their music unique was the introduction of lush, sweeping instrumental arrangements of strings and horns that accompanied a more danceable groove, often driven by African percussion. Artists like MFSB (Mother Father Sister Brother), The O'Jays and Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes were some of the many masters of this genre.

Emerging from the City of Brotherly Love, the Philly Soul genre gave us some of the best "message music" calling for people of all colors and nations to "come together and think like one, live together underneath the sun", "wake up everybody" and "start a love train". Artists in this genre gave voice to our common joys, heartaches and sorrows with the utmost class and sophistication.

Get down with "The Philly Sound 76" t-shirt, designed with funky 70s retro type and colors. Shop The Philly Sound 76 collection of men's and women's t-shirts now. The Art Of Soul Ltd brand exclusive design, only at The Color Pop Shop. Always remember ... love is the message.

The Color Pop Shop in collaboration with our resident music expert, legendary DJ Bobby Louie present our Top 10 all-time favorite, quintessential TSOP (The Sound Of Philadelphia) classics. We chose songs that we thought best crystallize that Philly Sound formula: hip-swaying soul + lush orchestra + message of love. We'd love to know what your favorites are too.

1) M.F.S.B. feat.  The Three Degrees - "Love Is The Message" (1973)

2) The O'Jays - "Message In Our Music (Re-Edit)" (1976)

3) Jean Carn - "Don't Let It Go To Your Head" (1978)

4) Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes - "Don't Leave Me this Way" (1975)

5) The Jacksons - "Show You The Way To Go" (1976)

... And rounding out our list of favorite TSOP masterpieces:

6) McFadden and Whitehead - "Ain't No Stopping Us Now" (1979)

7) Billy Paul - "I See the Light" (1973)

8) The Intruders - "I'll Always Love My Mama" (1973)

9) Lou Rawls - "You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine" (1976)

10) The Jones Girls - "Dance Turned Into A Romance" (1980)

I love the Philly soul sound! This is a great list you organized. Some of my favorite soul artists out of Philly are the late and great Phyllis Hyman and Teddy Pendergrass. Patti Labelle and the Bluebells were my favorite group. Love the shirt…very cool!
